My Story
Welcome to Lonesome Whistle, where the past meets the rails and history comes alive! I’m Fred Heilich, a retired railway enthusiast with a lifelong love for trains and an enduring fascination with the history and technology that powered them. After more than 40 years in the aerospace electromechanical flight controls industry, where I held roles in engineering, program management, and business development, I’ve shifted my focus to the rails—my true passion.

Throughout my career, I honed my skills as a writer and presenter, authoring technical papers, articles, and books, including works on traction drives and electromechanical actuators. But it’s my love for railroads that truly fuels my writing. I’m the author of The History of the Blairstown Railway, and I’ve contributed to numerous articles exploring the rich stories of the railways that shaped our world.

My hands-on experience extends beyond writing: I’ve operated and developed businesses for a shortline railroad and hold certifications as a locomotive engineer and qualified conductor. These experiences bring an authentic perspective to my work, blending technical knowledge with a deep appreciation for railway history.

Through Lonesome Whistle, I share engaging insights, captivating stories, and updates on the fascinating world of railways. Whether you’re a seasoned train enthusiast or a curious newcomer, I invite you to join me on this journey of nostalgia, discovery, and connection to the tracks that have carried us through history.
