Bergen Record Boxcar

Updated: Apr 28

Circa 1980, when I was part of a crew cleaning up Walter Rich's newly acquired ex-stored Autotrain coaches for an upcoming an online NYS&W excursion, I took a break and wondered around the NYS&W Little Ferry yard. There in the weeds, I came upon a derelict wooden boxcar with barely legible lettering "Bergen Evening Record". My photos didn't pick up the lettering very well. At a monthly Railroadians of America meeting, I mentioned seeing the car at Little Ferry. Member Art Ward said he had a B&W photo of it that he'd send to me. After 45 years, I found the photo in my files and decided it would be a good time to share it with the world. Too bad the original car was not preserved for all to see. You can see the writing on the side, "Bergen Evening Record, Short Line RR & Navigation Co., Friend of the People It Serves", on the end " MREX101" at Hackensack, NJ on 6-30-1962.

Thanks Art for sharing this photo with me these many years ago.
